850-pound safe apparently too heavy for burglars

November 4, 2009

Burglars bit off more than they could chew late Tuesday in Lincoln Square as they were forced to abandon an 850-pound safe on the sidewalk outside an office they ransacked.

“I have to give it to them, they moved it about 40 feet,” Lincoln District police Sgt. Patrick Barker said with a laugh. “I had three guys with me and the four of us had a hard time moving it. We only got 10 feet. It’s absolutely the heaviest thing I’ve ever had to move.”

The thieves forced open the front door of EM Realty, 5653 N. Lincoln, and tried to make off with the 1930s era safe — which was empty and being used as a table.

“They got as far as the sidewalk and dumped it,” Barker said.

Police found it at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Nearby was a broken 2-wheeled dolly marked “rated 600 pounds.”
