Three cops hospitalized after West Side squad car wreck

October 30, 2009

Three Chicago Police officers were hospitalized with minor injuries after a squad car flipped and crashed into a guardrail on an Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) ramp early Friday on the West Side.

The crash happened while police chased a drug-related kidnapping suspect on the expressway.

Police News Affairs said the accident happened about 2 a.m. at 3815 W. Congress Parkway when a squad car struck a guardrail.

Harrison District police said the police car was getting on a ramp to the westbound Eisenhower Expressway when the officer lost control on the slick roadway while avoiding another vehicle.

Three officers were taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for minor injuries, according to News Affairs.

The crash happened as Chicago Police, Illinois State Police and the FBI were pursuing a black pickup truck west on the Eisenhower Expressway. The chase started about 1:50 a.m. and ended about 2 a.m. near the Harlem exit, authorities said. The driver of the truck is suspected in a Thursday afternoon kidnapping on the South Side.

The chase culminated about 2:30 a.m. in northwest suburban Bloomingdale when at least two suspects were taken into custody.

Police News Affairs said the crash and chase were not related.
