A 17-year-old Marine Math and Science Academy junior was shot to death in Little Village Saturday evening, and an 18-year-old cousin he was with was wounded.

The two were near South Western and West Cermak about 6:15 p.m. when a gunman drove up, got of his vehicle and fired on the pair, fatally striking Oscar Marquez in the head and his companion in the arm, police said.

The teens drove themselves to Rush University Medical Center for treatment, but by the time they arrived, Marquez, of the 700 block of South Oakley, had died, authorities said. The 18-year-old man was listed in “stable” condition and was transferred to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County for further medical care, police said.

Marquez was the eldest of four children, his’ mother, Conception Marquez said, holding her 18-month-old youngest child in her apartment Sunday afternoon. Relatives and friends filled the living room; more continued to drop by.

She said her son liked the Marine academy, and thought about enrolling in the Marine Corps, after graduation. Many of his cousins went to school with him, she said.

“He had good grades,” she said in a quiet voice. He played soccer with his dad and with his younger siblings.

He and one of his cousins had gone shopping for shoes Saturday evening at a nearby mall and were on their way home when the shots rang out.

The cousin was shot in the arm and was expected to be OK, she said.

She did not know who fired shots at her son, saying police hadn’t told her much.
