Cops get lots of tips on Hadiya case, even from known gang members

As King College Prep students held a rally Monday over the murder of their classmate, Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said police are receiving many leads in the case, but none has helped to identify Hadiya Pendleton’s killer.
McCarthy gave the update at a South Side news conference, where he again called for stricter gun laws — particularly the mandated reporting of guns that are lost, stolen or transferred — as he displayed some of the 680 firearms seized by Chicago Police since Jan. 1.
“The community is standing up in this case very, very strongly. We’re getting a ton of information, and some of it looks pretty good,” he said.
The $40,000 reward offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Hadiya’s killer has spurred a tsunami of leads, many even coming in from known gang members, McCarthy said.
“We’re getting a ton of calls as a result of the reward. We have to take every single tip and explore its veracity. We’re making progress. But nothing at this point has panned out for us,” he said. “But this is going to happen. There’s no two ways about it but that we’re going to break this case.”
