A man trying to rob a 70-year-old man on the Blue line early Wednesday was instead stabbed in the back by his partner in crime — literally, police said.

The stabbing took place about 12:30 a.m. after the elderly man and the two would-be robbers boarded a train at the Kedzie Blue line station, according to a statement issued by police News Affairs.

One of the robbers yelled at the 70-year-old man and claimed he took the attacker’s cellphone, the statement said. The elderly man got out of his seat and walked toward the other end of the train, but the two men pushed him to the ground and began kicking him in the face, causing his left eye to swell, the statement said.

After cutting the man’s pants and swiping his wallet, one of the men tried to stab the elderly man but he instead stabbed his partner in the lower back, the statement said. Police were able to cuff the wounded attacker after he ran from one train car to another in an effort to escape, police said. Officers were searching for the man’s partner, who exited the train at the LaSalle Blue line station in the 500 block of South LaSalle, the statement said.

The elderly man and his attacker were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the statement said. The man stabbed in the back made “numerous threats to police” and spit on an officer, the statement said.

Charges had not been filed as of Wednesday morning.
