Shedd Aquarium closed for two days for routine maintenance
SUN-TIMES MEDIA WIRE January 22, 2013 12:28PM
The Shedd Aquarium will be closed for the next two days for its annual spring cleaning.
While the aquarium is closed Wednesday and Thursday, crews will deep clean floors, paint walls and re-carpet elevators, according to Bob Wengel, vice-president of facilities at the lakefront aquarium. Higher areas within the aquarium will also be dusted.
“As part of our energy efficiency initiative, we will retrofit lights to 600 lamps in the foyer with LED,” said Wengel, who added the routine maintenance would begin once the aquarium closes at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
It will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, and reopen on Friday.
The aquarium is closed so routine maintenance “doesn’t interrupt the guest experience,” spokeswoman Andrea Smalec said.
“It’s hard to drive a lift around 5,000 people,” Wengel said.
