With a tentative agreement in hand, students at Community Consolidated School District 46 report back to class Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Teachers’ union leaders said Monday plans are to talk to members this week about the new two-year contract and then vote on it.

Classes will resume at Avon Center, Meadowview, Prairieview, Woodview, Frederick, Grayslake Middle schools, and Park Campus. Students already had a scheduled day off Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The school board and teachers’ negotiating team hammered out the settlement in a marathon bargaining session which began Sunday night and ending just after midnight Monday, ending the three-day walkout.

Jim Pergander, representative for the Lake County Federation of Teachers Local 504, said the negotiating team did not have enough time to present the offer to union members because they have been catching up on sleep. He said they will set a date soon for the ratification vote.

“This tentative agreement is indicative of our shared dedication and commitment to working together to meet the needs of all members of the District 46 community — teachers, students, families and taxpayers,” said Ray Millington, District 46 board president. The school board is expected to ratify the contract within the next week or so.

“The important thing is students will be back in school and teachers will be back in the classroom,” Pergander said.
