Two people were in police custody and one person remained on the loose after high-speed chases through the North and Northwest sides Thursday morning that ended when a Jeep fleeing police flipped over in the Roscoe Village neighborhood.

It all started about 8 a.m. in the 4300 block of West Altgeld, police said. A 36-year-old woman looked out her picture window after hearing a crash and saw two men breaking into a van.

The men apparently saw her, and when she turned from the window, she heard a pop and a bullet struck her window. The woman was struck in the back of the neck by debris and flying glass but was not seriously injured, Perez said.

She then went back to the window and saw the men getting into a silver Jeep, Perez said. Grand Central District officers found the Jeep and tried to pull it over but the Jeep — with two men and a woman inside — drove off at a high rate of speed and the chase was terminated.

A description of the Jeep was broadcast over police radio and the chase was taken up by Illinois State Police, who also gave up because the Jeep was traveling too fast. It was next spotted by Shakespeare District officers near Fullerton and Clybourn but they lost sight of it as well, he said.

About 9:20 a.m., two police Transit Detail officers spotted the Jeep at Lincoln Avenue and School Street, still speeding, Perez said. They followed and saw the Jeep flip over at the corner of Paulina and School.

The three people inside tried to flee, and one, as of 1:30 p.m. Thurday, was still on the loose. The other two were caught and taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, Perez said. A Fire Media Affairs spokesman said one of those in the crash was in serious to critical condition.

Officers also recovered a handgun at the scene, Perez said.

In addition to the Roscoe Village crash, the Jeep was reportedly involved in two hit-and-run crashes — one in the 1900 block of West Diversey and another in the 1000 block of West School, Perez said. There were no reported injuries.

A school near the crash scene on School Street locked its doors and brought students inside when it was learned that the man had fled the scene, Perez said.

Charges against the two suspects in custody were pending.
