Ald. Anthony Beale, ex-Senate candidate Joyce Washington join 2nd District race

Chicago Ald. Anthony Beale and health-care executive Joyce Washington — a one-time U.S. Senate candidate — said Sunday they are running for the congressional seat formerly held by Jesse Jackson Jr.
They join an already crowded field of Democratic candidates vying for the 2nd District U.S. House seat that includes parts of Chicago’s South Side and southern suburbs.
Beale has served in the city council for 14 years representing the 9th Ward.
Washington was defeated by Barack Obama in the 2004 Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate.
Jackson resigned in November, citing health problems and an ongoing federal investigation into his campaign finances.
Other candidates who have filed so far include State Rep. Toi Hutchinson, of Olympia Fields; State Sen.-elect Napoleon Harris, of Flossmoor, a former Northwestern University and NFL football player; ex-con and former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds, of Dolton, who was replaced by Jackson; former state Rep. Robin Kelly, of Matteson; Victor Jonathan (formerly Victor Onafuye), of Country Club Hills, a South Side pastor; Clifford Eagleton, of Harvey, and Gregory Haynes, of Lynwood.
Monday is the filing deadline. The Democratic primary is set for Feb. 26.
