Police: officer’s head slammed to ground by man who resisted arrest

A convicted felon allegedly slammed an officer’s head to the ground causing the officer to lose consciousness when police tried to question him on the South Side.
About 7:05 p.m. Friday, officers responded to calls of shots fired in the area of 79th and Muskegon, police said. Plainclothes South Chicago District Tactical officers said they observed 43-year-old Tony Williams speeding from the scene in his car.
The officers stopped Williams in the 2900 block of E. 80th Street, but Williams, according to police, was very uncooperative with the officers and refused to comply with their verbal directions.
Fearing that Williams could have a weapon, one officer tried to pat him down, police said.
Williams, struggling with the officers, ended up slamming the officer’s head to the ground several times, police said. The officer briefly lost consciousness, police said.
The officer’s partner and other responding officers ended up taking Williams into custody. Williams was treated and released at Trinity Hospital for a minor cut, Police said. The injured officer, 38, suffered several cuts and bruises to the face, police said.
Williams, a convicted felon, of the 2700 block of East 77th Street, was charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and resisting arrest, both felonies, as well as two traffic violations: two headlights required on motor vehicle and license plate not illuminated.
Williams was scheduled to appear for a bond hearing at 26th and California on Saturday.
