When Chicagoans think of holiday season getaways, they’re bound to set their sights on warm-weather destinations such as Florida, California or Arizona, as well as Las Vegas, but our hometown is just as much of a holiday hot spot as any of those locales, according to a couple of recent polls by travel websites.
While the air may be chilly, it could be the city’s restaurants, theater scene, museums, first-rate hotels, shopping and other attractions, such as ice skating along Michigan Avenue, that make travelers think of Chicago when they consider holiday travel.
Getaroom.com, an online discount hotel stay company, ranked Chicago No. 6 on its list of the Top 10 Holiday Destinations for 2012. The top five destinations on the list were: New York, Las Vegas, Orlando, Fla., Miami, and San Francisco.
Travel site tripadvisor.com ranked Chicago third on its list of Top Spots for Holiday Travel. Only New York and Boston ranked ahead of Chicago, while our town topped Los Angeles and San Francisco as a holiday season destination.
Among TripAdvisor’s other findings in its holiday travel poll of 1,300 U.S. respondents, were that 27 percent cite airline delays and cancellations as the most frustrating part of traveling for the holidays, while 20 percent are most aggravated by inclement weather.
Also, according to TripAdvisor, those polled said their favorite holiday song to listen to while traveling is “White Christmas,” while “Santa Baby” was named the most annoying holiday song to listen to while traveling.
Looking ahead to the new year, 73 percent of those polled by TripAdvisor said they have already begun travel planning for 2013.
