2 men charged with attempted murder of cops appear in court

Bond was denied Thursday for two Little Village men who are charged with attempting to murder two Chicago Police officers when they allegedly opening fire on the cops Tuesday night on the Southwest Side.
Officers approached Giovanni Velez and Jose Sosa, both 22, about 7:20 p.m. in the 2600 block of West 23rd Place, police said. Velez produced a handgun and fired at the officers and the two fled the scene and were apprehended a short time later with a gun.
The officers were not wounded and did not return fire, police said.
Velez, of 2000 block of West Cermak Road, was charged with two felony counts of attempted first degree murder, two felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer and one felony count of armed habitual criminal.
Sosa, of the 2600 block of West 24th Place, was charged with two felony counts of attempted first degree murder, two felony counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer and one misdemeanor count of possession of cannabis - less than 2.5 grams.
On Thursday, both men were ordered held without bond, authorities said.
