A West Side man already in jail and awaiting trial on numerous gun charges – including attempted murder – now faces a murder charge as well, after recent DNA testing connected him to a May robbery and murder.

Deric Robinson, 19, of the 2000 block of West Washington Boulevard, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of armed robbery involving the discharge of a weapon causing bodily harm, police said.

Robinson was already booked into Cook County Jail June 28 without bond for attempted murder, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and misdemeanor aggravated assault with a firearm when Chicago Police arrested him again Tuesday for the May 8 murder of Akeem J. Morris, authorities said.

Robinson, Bobby Marbley, 18, and a third person robbed five people about 6:40 p.m. in the 4000 block of West West End Avenue then fled west, where they encountered Morris, according to court documents.

The still unidentified co-offender pointed a handgun at Morris while Robinson and Marbley went through his pockets, court documents said. The co-offender then shot Morris in the face.

Robinson and the co-offender fled northbound in a vehicle before crashing into a garage in the 4000 block of West Iowa Street and fleeing on foot, according to court documents. Marbley was captured in the area of the murder.

Morris, of the 4200 block of West Jackson Boulevard, was declared dead about four hours later at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

When Robinson was arrested in June he was positively identified as one of the robbers, but authorities were awaiting DNA results on a blood-covered hooded-sweatshirt and shoes found a flew blocks away from the from the crime scene.

DNA results on the clothing and a paper towel Robinson allegedly used to cover his face during the robberies contained both his and Morris’ DNA.

Marbley was previously charged with murder and will be back in court Jan. 14.

Police have not arrested or identified the co-offender who committed the robbery with Robinson and Marbley.
