Police chased and shot a 21-year-old man who pulled a gun in the South Shore neighborhood Monday morning, a police union spokesman said.
Two officers saw the man holding his side about 11 a.m. as he approached 75th Street and Stony Island, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said, When the officers tried to stop the man to talk, he began to run and pulled out a gun, Camden said.
Officers found the man crouching in a backyard in the 1500 block of East 77th Street, Camden said. When the man turned with the gun toward one of the officers, the officer shot the man, he said.
Rayshawn Balkcom, 23, was just returning to his home when he saw the man run into his backyard, with police chasing him.
“I see police with their guns out,” Balkcom said. “I couldn’t see him because the house was in the way, but then I hear the shots — four or five shots. Man I was just hoping I wouldn’t get shot in the crossfire.”
