A man was killed Thursday morning when his car struck a school bus — with high school students onboard — near Kankakee.
The accident happened about 7:15 a.m. on Illinois Route 113 westbound, just west of Warner Bridge Road, according to Illinois State Police.
The 2002 Chevrolet was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 113 when it struck the rear of a school bus loaded with students from Herscher High School, a release from state police said.
The school had its lights on and passengers were getting on at the time of the crash, the release said.
The driver of the Chevrolet died as a result of his injuries, state police said. His identity was not being immediately released, pending notification of next of kin. A small number of passengers on the bus were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. Parents of the injured school bus passengers were being contacted by Herscher High School representatives.
It was not yet known if the driver of the car was wearing a seatbelt. The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police.
