A Gary police officer shot and injured a pedestrian who assaulted the cop Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The officer, Shanesha Emmons, had just pulled over a motorist around 5:30 p.m. near 47th Avenue and Broadway when a pedestrian — who was not involved in the traffic stop — walked up to her, began yelling and assaulted her, according to a police report.

Emmons opened fire, striking the man in the right elbow, authorities said.

After the shooting, the man ran a few blocks north, removing his shirt in the process. According to police, he was located outside Leona Paradise Lounge, 5004 Broadway, and was transported to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus. His condition was not immediately available.

The 40-year-old Gary man is in police custody and faces felony charges of battery on law enforcement, said police Lt. Del Stout said.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Department was asked to investigate the shooting. Gary Police Department will handle criminal charges, Stout said.

What prompted the pedestrian to go after the officer, as police allege, as she was making a traffic stop was unclear.

“This guy was somebody who wasn’t part of the traffic stop and he wasn’t in the vehicle,” Stout said. “We don’t believe he had any relation to the people in the car.”
