Bicyclist hit, killed in Skokie

A 68-year-old bicyclist died early Friday after being struck by a vehicle while riding between stopped cars in north suburban Skokie.
The cyclist was identified as Robert McKenny of the 8600 block of Niles Center Road in Skokie, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
About 6:45 p.m. Thursday, McKenny was riding west across Skokie Boulevard, at Main Street, when he was struck by a southbound vehicle, according to Skokie Police Officer Joe Marzigliano.
The driver of the car tried to avoid hitting the bicycle, “and in doing so, hit a light pole” in addition to the bicycle, Marzigliano said. The 30-year-old driver of the car was uninjured, he said.
McKenny was taken to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.
No alcohol or drugs were believed to be a factor in the crash ,and according to a preliminary investigation, the bicyclist was at fault.
No charges or citations had been issued as of Friday morning.
