After attack on 14-year-old, Guardian Angels escort kids to school

Members of the Guardian Angels were out in force on the West Side on Thursday morning, escorting children to school near where a 14-year-old girl was abducted and sexually assaulted by a group of men earlier this week.

The girl was walking to school Monday morning about 7:45 a.m. near 16th Street and Trumbull Avenue when the men drove up to her, got of the vehicle, forced her inside at gunpoint and drove to an unknown location, according to a community alert from Area Central detectives.

She was taken into a house, where the six men sexually assaulted her, the alert said.

On Thursday morning, Guardian Angels escorted about 40 children to school in the area, according to Miguel Fuentes, national director of the Guardian Angels. The group is planning to go back to the area about 1 p.m. Thursday to escort home some children as they get out of school, he said.

The reception for the Angels was overall “very positive,” Fuentes said. “A lot of people were unaware” of the attack on Monday, and learned of it when Angels spoke to parents and community residents, and passed out fliers about the attack.

The Guardian Angels will continue to provide escorts to schoolchildren, Fuentes said, but at the same time, “We’re urging parents to step up. We can’t be at every corner, the police can’t be at every corner.”

He noted that in communities where violence is a fact of life, residents may not be vigilant about guarding against it, but “parents, guardians, neighbors” should keep an eye on the children, taking them to school and picking them.

The six offenders have family and acquaintances who know something or might recognize them from the description provided by police, he said. “They have to know something. They have to step forward and call police.”

The girl’s attackers were described as black men between 20 and 24, between 5-foot-6 and 6-foot-3, 130 to 170 pounds, the alert said.

Five had long dreadlocks, one with brown tips and another with red tips, while the sixth had a close fade haircut. Three had dark complexions, two offenders had medium-brown complexions and one had a light complexion.

They were in a gray 4-door vehicle of unknown make or model, with damage to the right side, the alert said.

Anyone with information should call detectives at (312) 747-8380.
