Suit: $162K in jewelry stolen from Highland Park open house

Updated: November 8, 2012 7:14AM

A Highland Park woman is suing a north suburban real estate firm, claiming the broker is responsible for more than $162,000 worth of jewelry stolen from her home during an April open house.

Lena Katamanin filed the suit Wednesday in Cook County Circuit Court against Winnetka-based Midwest Realty Ventures, LLC — which does business under the name Prudential Rubloff — and one of its agents.

Katamanin claimed the brokerage had “sole control” over her home in the 900 block of Sheridan Road in Highland Park during the April 22 open house and that more than $162,000 worth of her jewelry was missing afterward.

The suit blames the agent and Midwest Realty Ventures for “careless and negligent acts,” which led to the theft. The suit demands a jury trial and seeks an unspecified amount in damages.

The suit does not make clear whether the alleged theft was reported to local authorities. Neither Highland Park police nor Midwest Realty Ventures could be reached for comment Wednesday night.
