Robert Steele chosen to replace mother

Robert Steele, son of former Cook County board member Bobbie Steele, was chosen today to replace his mother on the board.

Democratic committeemen from the West Side district voted 14-1 to have Robert Steele fill the position.

A Chicago Park District administrator for 20 years, Robert Steele was the heavy favorite coming into the committeemen vote. His lone challenger was college professor and former Chicago police officer Sheila Vinson, who was backed by Ald. Ed Smith (28th).

Bobbie Steele held the county seat for 20 years but resigned last week after serving four months as board president.

Robert Steele, who will make $85,000 per year in the part time job, has his first meeting Wednesday.
