One dead in Mount Prospect fire

An elderly woman was killed in a fire early Saturday in an apartment in northwest suburban Mount Prospect, according to fire officials.
Firefighters responding to a report of smoke about 5:40 a.m. found the woman in a first-floor apartment in the 2300 block of South Canon Drive, according to a release from the Mount Prospect fire department. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but is not believed to be suspicious, according to Mount Prospect Fire Chief John Malcolm.
