A power outage left a teen stuck in an elevator for more than an hour in a high-rise Thursday night on the Near North Side, officials said.
The 18-year-old college freshman was rescued by firefighters from the elevator in a building on the 300 block of North Dearborn, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
When the elevator’s power failed, the woman was able to the talk to the front desk on the intercom, Langford said. The front desk called the Chicago Fire Deparmtent.
Firefighters went up another elevator in the building, guided by an elevator service technician, and locked the power on the elevator, Langford said.
The firefighters then went over the top into the elevator and placed a safety harness on a woman, who walked across a board between the two elevators and was lowered into the working elevator, Langford said.
“She was a little concerned about the gap between the elevators,” Langford said.
The woman was not injured, Langford said.
