Cook County Circuit Court employee charged with bribery, official misconduct

Updated: October 11, 2012 7:20PM

A Cook County Circuit Court employee was charged with bribery and official misconduct Thursday for allegedly promising an entry-level job in exchange for a bribe.

Jason Carrasco, a unionized office clerk in the Probate Division, did not have the authority to make hires, and has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County Dorothy Brown said in a statement.

Carrasco was ordered held in lieu of $7,500 bail Thursday.

“Although all defendants are innocent until proven guilty, I refuse to let the integrity of this office be compromised by the thoughtless and reckless behavior of a few employees,” Brown said in the statement.

“I have zero tolerance for employee misconduct and I will do all that is possible to ensure that any wrong doing will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

Just last week, clerk Benjamin M. Maldonado was charged with bribery for allegedly bilking a couple out of $2,000 by pretending to be a connected lawyer and promising to have traffic cases thrown out. Former Cook County Sheriff’s officer Jaime Baez was also charged in that scheme.

And in July, Circuit Court employee Jeannette Neibauer was charged with taking home court files and shredding them at her kitchen table.
