A 13-year-old boy was in critical condition Monday night after being shot in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, officials said.
The teen was shot twice in the back at 7:05 p.m. in the 8600 block of South Aberdeen, said police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada. The gunman approached on foot, opened fire and ran away, police said.
The shots startled a woman on the block who was unwinding on her couch.
“I was watching TV flipping the channels trying to find something to watch and heard about six shots and I just pretty much ducked down and stayed on the floor for a couple of minutes and called my mom to make sure she’s okay because she’d just left to go to the store,” said a local resident who asked not to be named.
Paramedics took the boy from the 8600 block of South Carpenter Street — one block east of the shooting — to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, the fire department said.
