Schaumburg police are warning residents to keep an eye out for a possible cougar after a motorist reported seeing a 60-pound animal with a “cat-shaped head” crossing a road in the northwest suburb.
The driver told police he saw the earth-colored, long-tailed animal about 8:30 p.m. near Roselle and Schaumburg roads, Sgt. John Nebl said.
It’s the first reported cougar-sighting in the suburb, though other sightings have been reported this year in several North Shore towns. Wildlife experts, though, have found no paw prints or other signs of the big cats in the Chicago area.
But a 124-pound male cougar was shot in 2008 after it wandered into Chicago and was cornered by police in an alley.
Anyone seeing an unusual animal should call 911, Nebl said.
