A man has been charged with killing two people who were found stabbed to death at a West Ridge apartment that was set on fire last month.
About 4 p.m. August 28, firefighters responded to a call of a fire inside an apartment in the 6400 block of North Sacramento Avenue, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze in “a few minutes” and called police to the scene after they found the bodies during the ensuing search, Langford said.
The pair — Gary Brown, 64, and Chun Xiao Lee, 48 — died from multiple stab wounds, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said after an autopsy was conducted last month.
Police announced early Wednesday that Dejuan Pratt, 24, of the 800 block of North Bernhard Avenue in Columbus, Ohio, was charged with two counts of first degree murder, two counts of armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, two counts of unlawful possession of a credit card, aggravated identity theft, identity theft involving $2,000 to $10,000, possession of a stolen vehicle, aggravated arson and disorderly conduct for lying to an official, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
According to the statement, Pratt was arrested at O’Hare International Airport on Monday after he was allegedly seen driving Lee’s vehicle. Police also claim Pratt carried credits cards belonging to Brown and Lee.
Pratt had lived with Brown and Lee not long before the murders, the statement said.
He is scheduled to appear in bond court later Wednesday.
