Three accidents reduced traffic on the Eisenhower Expressway to a standstill Saturday night, according to Illinois State Police.
At one point, all but one inbound lane was closed and traffic rerouted around the accidents. But as of 12 a.m. Sunday, all lanes were reopened.
The first crash happened about 8:30 p.m. when a man on the right shoulder tried to run across the expressway near Kostner Avenue and was fatally struck, Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper Ivan Bukaczyk said.
He has not yet been identified, and the driver of the vehicle that struck him was not charged.
As a result, westbound lanes were closed near the accident as authorities investigated, Illinois State Police said. Traffic was being diverted onto Independence and back onto the Interstate at Cicero, Illinois State Police said.
Then, about 10:20 p.m., two other accidents happened in quick succession about in the inbound lanes near Morgan Street, State Police said.
Crews cleared the first wreck quickly, but the second rear-end collision blocked all but the left lane until about 11 p.m., State Police said. No one was seriously injured in either inbound crash.
