Riverdale police shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a gun at them in the south suburb Friday evening.
Officers were responding to reports that someone was firing a gun, and allegedly saw 40-year-old Steven L. Watson enter an apartment building in the 13900 block of South Edbrooke Avenue around 6:25 a.m., according to Riverdale police.
Officers chased Watson inside and confronted him, ordering him to drop the handgun he was holding, police said. Officers fired “in fear for their life” after Watson allegedly turned his weapon toward them.
Watson, who lived at a different address in the same block, was pronounced dead at MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island at 7:20 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
State Police and investigators from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office Public Integrity Task Force are investigating the shooting.
