On a Gold Coast street teeming with women joggers and moms pushing high-end strollers, a woman told police she was grabbed Tuesday night by a man while walking from an elevator to her apartment door and sexually assaulted in her home.
The assault occurred about 10:30 p.m. inside the woman’s apartment a mid-rise building in the 1300 block of North Dearborn, police said.
Police had almost no description of the attacker — other than his “Eastern European accent” — because the woman told investigators it was dark and that he approached her from behind.
The manager in the building where the woman lived said Wednesday that she had spoken several times to the victim.
“She seems like she’s fine,” said the apartment manager, who did not want her name used. “She left the hospital this morning. She said she didn’t see the guy.”
The victim said her attacker was wearing gloves, the apartment manager said.
George Blakemore, a resident in the building for 40 years, told the Chicago Sun-Times that he has complained to management several times about unlocked doors and poor security in the building. Blakemore showed a reporter one side door on the first floor, which he said had been constantly left unlocked — until new locks were installed Wednesday.
“For several years, I’ve seen the building deteriorate in terms of safety and security,” Blakemore said.
Another resident said he has lived in the building for two years and has had no complaints about security or safety.
A call to the company that manages the apartment building was not returned Wednesday.
