West suburban teachers’ union sues over evaluations

Updated: September 11, 2012 2:26AM

A west suburban teacher’s union is suing District 209, claiming it violated Illinois’ school code by conducting teacher evaluations more frequently than allowed.

Proviso Teachers Union filed the suit Monday in Cook County Circuit Court against Proviso Township High School District 209.

The district operates three high schools — Proviso East in Maywood, Proviso West in Hillside and Proviso Mathematics and Science Academy in Forest Park.

Illinois School Code allows the district to evaluate tenured teachers only once every two years, the union claims in the lawsuit. Those reviews were scheduled for the 2010-2011 school year, as well as this upcoming year.

However, D209 also evaluated all tenured teachers the year between, from 2011 to 2012, the union claims. The suit seeks a declaration that the district is in violation of the state’s school code.

The district’s superintendent could not be reached for comment.
