About 39 people, mostly school children, were hospitalized after a school bus crashed in Marseilles in rural LaSalle County on Monday morning.

The accident occurred at 8:16 p.m. at East 25th and North 32nd Roads and left the bus on its side, according to a LaSalle County Sheriff Tom Templeton.

A silver pickup truck traveled into the intersection and was struck by the school bus, Templeton said. The school bus did not have a stop or yield sign.

About 39 people were hospitalized, which included the school children aboard the bus, and the school bus and pickup drivers, he said. About 22 children were released to the care of their parents.

The bus was en route to Milton Pope Elementary School at 3197 E. 28th Road, about two from the crash site, Templeton said.
