Police shoot suspect in South Chicago neighborhood

Updated: September 11, 2012 8:20PM

Police shot a man just after midnight Monday in the South Chicago neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 12:05 a.m. in the 7900 block of South South Shore Drive, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Officers were investigating an earlier call of “shots fired” when they saw two men standing on the sidewalk, one with a handgun in his waistband, according to a police statement.

The men walked toward the police and the one with the handgun pointed it at one of the officers, prompting them to open fire. The police then arrested him, according to the statement.

The man, 26, was taken in “stable” condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with gunshot wounds to the left arm and left buttock, police said, adding that he had two weapons convictions in the last four years.

The second man was also arrested, according to the statement.

Independent Police Review Authority spokesman Larry Merritt said a weapon was recovered.

IPRA and Area South detectives continue to investigate.
