Friday is last day to return overdue books with no fines, no questions asked

Updated: October 9, 2012 2:31PM

Hey, you with that Chicago
Public Library book that was due back in . . .

Well, let’s just say it’s long overdue. You know who you are.

Friday is the last day of the library’s first amnesty program in 27 years. That means you have until 5 p.m. Friday to return that book to any city library — without paying fines. That’s right — the librarian will look the other way.

So far, the oldest book that’s been returned under the amnesty program — which began three weeks ago on Aug. 20 — was checked out 78 years ago.

This year’s amnesty is the first system-wide fine forgiveness program since 1985.
