Gary Shapiro, appointed Monday as acting U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois:
◆ Is 65, was born in New York City, raised in Dallas and lives in Evanston.
◆ Graduated from Rice University in 1968 and from University of Texas School of Law in 1971.
◆ Has been first assistant U.S. attorney for 14 years and has been a federal prosecutor in Chicago for four decades. Previously in charge of all criminal prosecutions and, before that, oversaw all federal organized-crime prosecutions in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin.
