Connie, Alan and Kevin Roberson all knew their elderly mother was having problems. Martha Roberson’s leg had swollen and turned black. She had lice in her hair and hadn’t gotten off a couch for days.

Prosecutors said the trio even discussed moving the 77-year-old Aurora woman to a nursing home. But their mother, Martha Roberson, was paying the rent for the house they all were living in. So they left her on couch to urinate and defecate on herself.

Now, all of the siblings have admitted they should have done more. On Thursday, Connie and Alan Roberson pleaded guilty to felony criminal neglect of an elderly person. Kevin Roberson pleaded guilty earlier this month.

Each faces up to five years in prison, but could be sentenced to probation. Connie and Alan Roberson are scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 9. Kevin Roberson is scheduled to be sentenced on July 11.

In 2011, police and paramedics were called to the Roberson home on Randall Road in Aurora for a report of a woman with sores. Police found Martha Roberson had numerous sores, including a 3-inch deep open wound. According to Kane County Assistant State’s Attorney Deb Bree, her toenails were about an inch long. She was dehydrated and had lice in her hair, Bree said.

According to court documents, her children did not take her to follow-up doctor visits or get her prescription medication. In fact, she had been sitting in a love seat for at least two days straight, Bree said.

Connie Roberson tried to clean her mother up two or three times a week, Bree said. At some point, Connie Roberson noticed that her mother’s leg had turned black and maggots were on the leg, Bree said. The leg ended up with severe tissue damage that led to gangrene and the eventual amputation of part of the leg.

Paramedics who went to the Roberson home reported an “overwhelming odor of dead and decaying flesh,” prosecutors said.

A private guardian was appointed to make financial and medical decisions on Martha Roberson’s behalf.

All the Roberson siblings have previous convictions. According to prosecutors, Alan Roberson, now 55, was charged with drunken driving in 2008 and 2009. Kevin Roberson, 43, was charged with drunken driving in 2010 and possession of a controlled substance in 1995. Connie Roberson, 51, has a 1992 felony charge of manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance.
