Updated: June 20, 2012 5:43AM

A two-year-old boy suffered head injuries after falling from a window in a second-story apartment Tuesday night in the South Side Marquette Park neighborhood.

The boy was left home alone in a second-story apartment in the 6100 block of South Artesian Avenue, according to police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines. He was discovered lying on the sidewalk by a neighbor at about 9 p.m. Tuesday.

He suffered an abrasion to his head and was taken to the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, Gaines said.

The toddler’s mother--22-year-old Vernisha Carter--was charged with one count of misdemeanor endangerment of a child and one count of misdemeanor reckless conduct, police said.

Carter is expected to appear in court July 11.
