No one was hurt but several Near North Side businesses were evacuated for about an hour Monday when a construction crew hit a gas main.
The break in a two-inch gas main was reported about 3:20 p.m. in the 900 block of West Weed Street, Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said.
A Level 2 Hazardous Materials response was called as a precaution because of all the nearby businesses, he said. Three to four of the shops had to be evacuated.
Peoples Gas crews were able to shut off gas to the pipe, and people were allowed to return shortly after 4 p.m., he said.
A construction crew working in the area caused the break, Langford said. No one was injured in the incident.
