A fire on the roof of a building in the West Town neighborhood sent “spectacular” plumes of smoke about the city Friday aftrnoon.
The fire started about 4 p.m. on the roof of a two-story building in the 1400 block of West Erie Street, according to Fire Media. The fire was out by about 4:45 p.m
The “spectacular smoke was caused by burning decking,” according to Fire Media Affairs. Even though the smoke was thick, very little fire got inside the building.
Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford said that roofing materials can easily ignite in hot, dry weather. Smoking and grilling are often common causes of these types of fires, he added.
No injuries were reported.
