Teen dies after being pulled from water at North Ave. Beach

A 14-year-old boy pulled from the waters of Lake Michigan on the Near North Side on Tuesday afternoon has died.
George Sosa, 14, was pronounced dead at 9 p.m. Tuesday after he was transported by paramedics to the Lurie Children’s Hospital, according to fire officials and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Two teenage boys told a Chicago Park District lifeguard that they could not find their friend who was last seen in the lake, said Park District spokeswoman Jessica Maxey-Faulkner.
Lifeguards began searching the water and immediately pulled the boy out and performed CPR on him after he was found, Maxey-Faulkner said.
The boy was unresponsive when a lifeguard pulled him from the water, said Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.
Paramedics were called to the beach during the search, and they took the boy to the hospital in “extremely critical condition” after emergency crews responded to North Avenue Beach just after 5 p.m., authorities said.
Paramedics were able to get a response from him as they transported him to the hospital, but he was later pronounced dead, according to officials.
It wasn’t immediately known what he was doing at the beach or how long he was under the water, officials said.
The Park District is conducting an investigation into the incident, Maxey-Faulkner said.
