A Northwest Indiana baby was hospitalized in serious condition after it was attacked by the family pit bull, Merrillville police said.
Sgt. Jeff Rice said the child’s mother put the 9-month-old baby on the floor of their Merrillville home to play at 8:17 a.m. Saturday, with the 7-year-old pit bull lying nearby.
The dog suddenly bit the baby on the neck and head, Rice said. The mother was able to pull the dog off the child and put it in another room while she called for help.
The child was taken to The Methodist Hospitals Southlake campus then airlifted to a hospital in Illinois. Rice said the child suffered puncture wounds in the back of the neck, head, skull and brain.
The dog, which has not had a history of problems and was up to date on its shots, has been put in quarantine, he said.
