The family of a man who was hit and killed by a police squad car last month is suing the Will County sheriff’s department.
The mother of Andrew May Jr. filed the lawsuit Friday in Will County Circuit Court seeking more than $50,000, records show.
May was walking south on Briggs Street April 4 when he was hit by a car driven south on Briggs by an unnamed officer, the suit said. May died April 7, it said.
Police have said the unnamed deputy was on patrol at the time. There are sidewalks on both sides of the street, but police said May was in the road “about 4 or 5 feet from the shoulder” when he was hit.
The deputy was not injured but was placed on administrative leave.
A sheriff’s spokesman declined to comment.
