A man who pointed a gun at police after an officer saw him shooting at people on a porch in the South Side Chatham neighborhood was in police custody Thursday afternoon after the officer fired at him.
Neither the man nor the officer were injured, which started about 2:22 p.m. on the 900 block of East 79th Street when an officer observed a male firing a handgun at several people on a porch in the 7900 block of South Ingleside, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
The officer yelled out that he was a police officer, at which time the man turned and pointed the handgun at the officer, Baety said.
The officer fired at the man, but did not strike him. The man then ran and, after a brief footchase, was apprehended, Baety said.
A handgun was recovered, Baety said.
