Suspects nabbed after armed robbery in Hyde Park

A Hyde Park man walking home after returning to the city on a plane got a rude reception when he was robbed at gunpoint early Wednesday, but police were able to nab two of the robbers after a chase.

About 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, officers were flagged down by a 25-year-old man at 53rd Street and South Drexel Avenue, police spokesman Officer John Mirabelli said.

The man said he was just getting home from the airport when three men — one with a handgun — approached and demanded his belongings, Mirabelli said.

One of the three punched him, causing cuts and scrapes, and then the men stole a laptop computer, duffle bag and passport, Mirabelli said.

They drove away in a gold Pontiac Grand Prix , but police spotted the car and tried to pull it over, Mirabelli said. The men drove off, at one point running a red light. Police stopped the car near 47th and Wentworth, where the three suspects jumped out and ran.

While one eluded capture and remained at large Wednesday afternoon, the other two were caught, Mirabelli said.

Police recovered the stolen items from the car, as well as a loaded .40-caliber handgun, he said.

Police were looking into whether the men may have been involved in several other armed robberies, Mirabelli said.
