Will County Forest Preserve commissioners suspended their executive director for one day without pay Wednesday because she forgot to post public notice of a board planning workshop last week.

Forest Preserve President Cory Singer said he recommended the punishment for Marcy DeMauro to the board’s executive committee, which voted to suspend DeMauro after a closed session Wednesday morning.

DeMauro also wrote a letter to the commissioners apologizing for her mistake, Singer said, and she must reimburse the district because its attorney had to write a letter to Will County State’s Attorney Jim Glasgow disclosing the gaffe.

DeMauro said she realized she forgot to post the notice about two-thirds of the way through the meeting in question — a planning workshop held last Thursday during which Singer said no action was taken.

She said it was an “inadvertent error,” and doesn’t expect the legal fees to amount to more than an hour of the attorney’s time — or about $230.

Despite the discipline, Singer sung DeMauro’s praises hours after the vote. He said she made a bad decision, the board handled it and life goes on.

“She does a tremendous job for this district,” Singer said.

DeMauro was working Wednesday and plans to take her suspension Friday. She called the board’s punishment “fair” and went on to say she has a great working relationship with the board.

“You take your lumps and you move on,” DeMauro said.
