A 42-year-old woman who spanked a 10-year-old girl and hit her in the head with a spoon when she couldn’t understand her homework was charged with aggravated battery to a child and aggravated domestic battery.
Connie Neeley of Winthrop Harbor was being held on $200,000 bail in the Lake County Jail, Winthrop Harbor Police Det. Sgt. Christopher Willets said.
Police were called May 11 after the principal at Westfield School in Winthrop Harbor noticed the girl had two black eyes and her forehead was red and swollen.
When questioned, Neeley confessed she was frustrated that the child could not grasp a math problem she had for homework that they had been working on for about two hours. She said she spanked the girl and hit her on the head with a spoon.
The principal called an ambulance, and the girl was taken to the hospital for treatment and then to the Lake County Child Advocacy Center. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services assisted with the investigation.
