Chicago-area man arrested with guns, ammo

November 4, 2008

Police and the Secret Service are investigating whether a man arrested this afternoon in Rosemont with an assault rifle intended to harm Barack Obama, several sources have told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The man, who is from a northwest suburb, was being interviewed by authorities, sources said.

Rosemont police Sgt. Keith Kania confirmed the arrest but declined to go into details.

“There’s an individual who we have in custody at this time. There’s no charges as of yet,” Kania said. “As part of the investigation, we’ve gotten the assistance of other law enforcement agencies.”

The arrest was made during a routine traffic stop. A laptop computer in the vehicle was open to a YouTube page about possible rioting by African Americans if Obama won today’s presidential election, the sources said.

Police also recovered a stun gun, handguns and ammunition, sources said.

Besides the Secret Service, Chicago police were involved in the investigation, sources said.
