Lincoln-Way Central High School senior Tom Schuman died of natural causes — an undiagnosed cardiac condition — Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Wednesday.
Toxicology reports were negative, he said.
Schuman, 18, was found unresponsive in his bed March 31 in his family’s New Lenox home. When his younger brother tried to wake him up for a Saturday baseball game, Schuman did not respond.
The son of Dan and Lynn Schuman was a star baseball player and golfer for Lincoln-Way Central, and his sudden death shocked the community.
He left school early on that Friday because he was not feeling well. After taking a nap, he went to a movie and later talked on the phone to a friend at 12:30 a.m.
Initial autopsy results were inconclusive and required further testing, which revealed the cardiac condition.
Schuman planned to attend the University of Minnesota after graduating from Lincoln-Way Central.
