$40 million to study redo of Circle Interchange

SPRINGFIELD — An estimated $375 million project to alleviate traffic from Chicago’s Circle Interchange crept forward Monday as Gov. Pat Quinn announced the launch of a $40 million engineering study aimed at increasing its capacity.
A statement from Quinn’s office said more than 300,000 vehicles navigate the interchange each day, and delays average about 10 minutes a day per vehicle. The Kennedy, Eisenhower and Dan Ryan expressways along with Congress Parkway all converge at the interchange.
IDOT spokesman Guy Tridgell said the $375 million figure was “an initial ballpark estimate” and that the cost will depend on the plan.
Quinn touted the project as a job-creator and a way to help the environment by curbing emissions that result from cars being stuck in traffic.
