Cookie poll a sweet sign for Obama?

NORTHBROOK | His outsell McCain's 20-1 -- in 'Obama land'

September 8, 2008

If cookies could really tell fortunes, Barack Obama has John McCain all but cooked.

The Illinois senator's cookies at Northbrook-based Max and Benny's have been outselling McCain's 20 to 1 since the eatery started selling the treats bearing the presidential candidates' likeness in July.

"We're in Obama land," said manager and part owner Ben Schlan, who drummed up the idea for the political cookies with pastry chef Joe Lochirco. "I'm sure if you went to Arizona with these cookies, McCain would be outselling Obama."

Max and Benny's will begin selling Joseph Biden and Sarah Palin cookies today.

At $4.95 each, the cookies are not cheap, but they're hard to beat as a "biting" political statement.

"It's so clever, and they really look well-done," customer Steve Kravetz said after buying both Obama and McCain cookies last week. "After the conventions, everyone's talking about the race, and this will give everyone a good laugh."
