A 15-year-old boy died and three other males were wounded when a gunman entered a Washington Park neighborhood apartment building’s hallway and opened fire Monday night on the South Side, authorities said.
Friends and neighbors identified the dead teen as George Howard.
Patricia Strange — the mother and grandmother of two survivors — said the four friends had just visited her daughter’s home less than a block away, and were coming to visit her when gunfire erupted inside the hallway in her four-story apartment building in the 300 block of East 53rd.
“They shoot around here regularly,” Strange said. “It’s been terrible around here.”
Paramedics took a 14-year-old boy in critical condition to a local hospital, fire officials said. Strange only knew the boy by a nickname.
Strange said her son Wayne Strange, 32, and grandson Keith Strange, 20, were taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
